About SNP

Value Statement
We agree to demonstrate the values of reverence, responsibility, integrity, education, compassion, and graciousness in our strategic plans, programs, policies, and all that we do.

Vision Statement
To become a place of solace that nurtures the land and the human spirit.

Mission Statement
To Preserve the land and the human connection to the natural landscape, to Educate the local and broader communities about the value of nature, and to Nurture both the ecosystem and the people connected with it.

Preserve
Founded in 1993 in memory of Leland S. Swaner, the Preserve encompasses over 1200 acres of critical habitat, including high altitude wet meadow and stream habitat, providing home to numerous animal and plant species. Swaner Nature Preserve provides Snyderville Basin with a breathtaking view shed, groundwater recharge, and avenue for environmental education. As a land trust, the land will be preserved in perpetuity.

Educate
Swaner Nature Preserve provides hands-on, interpretive learning experiences in areas such as ecology, botany, wildlife sciences, and land stewardship. Programs consist of both formal and informal experiential activities. Examples include providing outdoor field trips for Summit County’s 4th and 5th graders, informal morning nature walks, and a winter and summer lecture series. Our Nature Education Center will house museum caliber exhibits intended to educate and entertain all visitors to, and residents of, Utah. It will also be home to our expanding educational programming.

Nurture
Through restoration projects, including improving stream corridors, planting native flora, and weed management, the Preserve is nurturing the land back to a healthy ecosystem. Our restoration plan, developed with public and private partnerships and with local community support, will increase the wetland values of the land, enhance wildlife habitat, improve water quality, and foster biodiversity.
